Nable SMS for Retell Phone Number and Route to Chat Agent

Hi team,

I purchased a phone number through Retell (Provider: Telnyx) and have both a Voice Agent and Chat Agent configured.

I would like to enable two-way SMS on this number so incoming text messages can be handled by my Chat Agent.

Currently:

  • I do not see any SMS configuration or SMS Agent options in the Phone Numbers page.

  • Sending an SMS to the number fails and no chat session appears in Chat History.

  • The number was purchased directly through Retell.

Can you confirm whether SMS is supported on this number and, if so, how I can enable and route SMS messages to my Chat Agent?

Hi,

As far as Ik, if you buy telnyx number through RetellAI, they do not support SMS registration.
Attached is a screenshot of warning given on RetellAI dashboard before buying Telnyx numbers.

Hey @sabari.selvaraj SMS is not supported on Telnyx numbers.

“SMS capabilities are available for Retell Twilio numbers and custom telephony numbers that have passed A2P applications. Telnyx is not supported yet.”

To use two-way SMS with a Chat Agent, you would need a Retell Twilio number instead. Once on Twilio, you can enable SMS via the A2P application process and then attach your Chat Agent to the number.
