UAE outbound calls blocked with Telnyx BYOT - Call country not supported: AE

Hello Retell team,

We are using Retell with a Telnyx BYOT / SIP connection.

Our setup:

  • Retell number: +1 808 698 0662
  • Provider: Telnyx
  • Telnyx FQDN connection to sip.retellai.com is Active
  • Telnyx Outbound Voice Profile = Default
  • United Arab Emirates (+971) is explicitly enabled in Telnyx Allowed Destinations
  • Retell shows Allowed Outbound Countries = All countries allowed
  • Outbound agent is assigned correctly

When we call the Retell API to create an outbound call to a UAE number, we receive:

Call country not supported: AE

Questions:

  1. Does Retell support outbound calls to UAE (+971) when using Telnyx BYOT / SIP?
  2. If yes, what exact setting or approval is required?
  3. Is this restriction applied by Retell before the call is handed off to Telnyx?
  4. If UAE is not supported through Retell create-phone-call, what is the recommended way to let Telnyx originate the call while Retell handles the AI conversation?

Please provide the exact supported configuration. We want to avoid further trial-and-error.

Thank you.

Hello @alwadi.uniforms

Thanks for providing the detailed configuration.

The “Call country not supported: AE” error indicates that the destination is being restricted by Retell before the call is handed off to the telephony provider. The “Allowed Outbound Countries” setting does not override Retell’s supported destination list.

Unfortunately, UAE (+971) is not currently supported for outbound calls through Retell’s create-phone-call flow, including when using Telnyx BYOT/SIP.

For UAE calling, the recommended approach is to use your own telephony provider/SIP setup to originate the call and connect it to Retell for the AI conversation. If you’d like, we can also review your specific setup and confirm the appropriate Custom Telephony configuration.

Thank you!

Hello,

Thank you for clarifying the cause of the issue.

Our Telnyx account is now fully verified, and outbound calling to UAE
(+971) is enabled on the Telnyx side. Since Retell’s create-phone-call
flow blocks UAE destinations before handing the call to Telnyx, we
would like to proceed with the recommended Custom Telephony / SIP
approach.

Our target flow is:

  1. n8n triggers the outbound call.
  2. Telnyx originates the call to the UAE number.
  3. Once the call is answered, Telnyx connects the call to Retell for
    the AI conversation.

Could you please review this setup and confirm the exact configuration
required on the Retell side?

Specifically, please provide:

  • The correct SIP URI / endpoint we should use.
  • Any required authentication or headers.
  • The exact Custom Telephony settings inside Retell.
  • Any Telnyx SIP trunk or connection settings required to bridge the
    call to Retell.
  • Any webhook or API configuration needed for this flow.

We already have the AI agent working correctly in Retell, including
Arabic and English conversations, so our main goal is to complete
outbound UAE calling using Telnyx as the originating carrier.

We would appreciate step-by-step instructions based on this exact
setup so we can implement it without further trial and error.

Thank you.

Hey @alwadi.uniforms

Could you please share the Call ID of a recent failed call? This will help us review the call details and investigate the issue further.

Best Regards.

Hello Mark,

Thank you for your response.

There is no failed Call ID to share because the issue is not a failed
call. The call is not being created at all. As previously confirmed,
Retell blocks UAE (+971) destinations in the create-phone-call flow
before the request is handed off to Telnyx.

We are asking for guidance on configuring the alternative flow you recommended:

  1. n8n triggers Telnyx to originate the outbound UAE call.
  2. Telnyx connects the answered call to Retell through Custom Telephony/SIP.
  3. Our existing Retell AI agent handles the conversation.

Could you please provide the exact step-by-step configuration for this
setup, including:

  • The Retell SIP URI or endpoint that Telnyx must connect to.
  • Any required authentication, SIP headers, or credentials.
  • The Custom Telephony settings required inside Retell.
  • The Telnyx SIP trunk/connection configuration required to bridge the
    call to Retell.
  • Any webhook or API configuration needed.
  • How the call should be linked to our existing Retell agent.

The agent itself is already working correctly in Arabic and English.
The remaining issue is establishing this Telnyx-to-Retell connection
for outbound UAE calls.

Thank you.

Hey @alwadi.uniforms

Could you please share your Organization ID with us?This will allow us to investigate the issue further.

Best Regards.

Hello Mark,

Thank you. Our Organization / Workspace ID is:

org_U9jYXjLi5o1pSCqs

Please use this to investigate the UAE outbound calling issue further. As noted previously, the call is not being created at all when attempting to call UAE (+971) numbers through Retell with our Telnyx BYOT setup.

We would appreciate your assistance in resolving this as soon as possible, as this issue has already delayed our implementation significantly.

Best regards,
Majeed

Hey @alwadi.uniforms

I’ve escalated your request to the relevant team. As soon as I receive an update from them, I’ll let you know promptly.

Best Regards.

Hello Mark,

Just following up on the UAE outbound calling issue with Telnyx BYOT.
You mentioned on September 5 that the request had been escalated to
the relevant team.

Could you please let us know if there is any update, workaround, or
expected timeline for supporting outbound calls to UAE (+971) through
Retell?

Our Telnyx side is already verified and enabled for UAE outbound
calling, so we are currently blocked only at the Retell
create-phone-call step.

Thank you.

Hey @alwadi.uniforms

This number is a Retell-managed number, not a BYOT. For Retell-managed numbers, only certain countries are available to call: International calling rates for Retell numbers
