Hi, is it possible to connect mexican phone numbers and call other local mexican numbers?

Yes, you can connect Mexican phone numbers and make calls to local Mexican numbers using Retell AI through SIP trunking(1)(2).

To make outbound calls to Mexican numbers, you have two options(3):

  1. Integrate with a third-party telephony provider like Twilio or Zadarma by connecting your own number via SIP trunking(3). This setup allows you to configure international calling capabilities, including calls to Mexico(3).

  2. Import a number with international calling enabled from a provider that supports international calls into Retell AI and configure it for outbound calling to Mexico(3).

For connecting via SIP trunking, you can follow the setup process documented at Custom Telephony(2).

Oh ok. And once connected will I be able to send text messages to mexican numbers too?

Based on the available sources, SMS capabilities in Retell AI are currently limited to US numbers only(1).

The documentation specifically states that “Current SMS capabilities are limited to US numbers only”(1). SMS is supported for Retell Twilio numbers and your own Twilio numbers (BYOT), but Telnyx is not supported yet(1).

For custom telephony providers like those you would use to connect Mexican numbers via SIP trunking, the documentation notes that you should check your own telephony provider’s documentation on how to enable SMS(1). Additionally, SMS functionality from custom telephony numbers is being added but currently only works for Retell Twilio numbers(2).

So while you can connect Mexican phone numbers for voice calls through SIP trunking, SMS to Mexican numbers is not currently supported through Retell AI’s built-in SMS features.

Ok so do I need to reach out to twilio to let me text in mexico?

For SMS to Mexico or other international destinations, you would need to check directly with Twilio about their international SMS capabilities and any additional setup or compliance requirements they have for messaging to Mexico. The Retell AI documentation doesn’t cover international SMS configuration beyond the US limitation(1).

If you’re using your own Twilio number (BYOT - Bring Your Own Twilio), you’d manage international SMS permissions and setup directly through your Twilio account(1)(2).
