Anyone have experience forwarding google voice calls? My current solution is to forward google voice calls to an open phone number, then forward to a transfer agent that clicks 1, which then forwards to the client agent.
Just kind of a pain in the ass, and sometimes the transfer agent doesn’t transfer quickly after pressing one.
This is necessary because google voice requires a linked number that you verify through a confirmation code received through text.
Based on community experience, there isn’t a direct way to forward Google Voice numbers to Retell AI agents.(1) Google Voice requires OTP verification via text to link numbers, which creates complications—Twilio numbers won’t work because they filter OTP requests with error code 30038.(1)
The workaround that has been successful is porting the Google Voice number to an intermediary system like RingCentral or Grasshopper, which then provides flexibility to forward calls to your Retell AI agent.(1)
For general call forwarding to Retell AI agents from business phone numbers, you can use call forwarding from your existing number to the Retell number.(2) If you need human escalation, you can configure the transfer call function to route to a separate number for human representatives.(2)
Your current multi-hop solution (Google Voice → open number → transfer agent → client agent) seems to be addressing the Google Voice OTP limitation, but the porting approach would eliminate the transfer agent delay issue you’re experiencing.
