**Yes, you can add your own MCP (Model Context Protocol) server to use with Retell AI agents.**[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)[(2)](https://www.retellai.com/blog/connect-any-ai-voice-agent-to-mcp-with-retell-ai-mcp-node)[(3)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efmWhp8Pd5I)

To add your custom MCP server to Retell AI:[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)[(3)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efmWhp8Pd5I)

1. Click on **+ Add MCP** in your agent configuration[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
2. Enter your MCP server URL (the endpoint where your MCP server is hosted)[(3)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efmWhp8Pd5I)
3. Optionally set custom request headers and query parameters[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
4. Select the MCP tool from the list of available tools[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
5. Optionally set response variables to extract values from the MCP tool response and save them as dynamic variables[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
6. Save the MCP Tool[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
7. Update your agent’s prompt to explicitly indicate when to invoke the MCP tool[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

Your MCP server must expose the proper endpoints that Retell AI can call.[(2)](https://www.retellai.com/blog/connect-any-ai-voice-agent-to-mcp-with-retell-ai-mcp-node)[(3)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efmWhp8Pd5I) The MCP server acts as a secure endpoint that mediates requests from your agent to your external tools.[(2)](https://www.retellai.com/blog/connect-any-ai-voice-agent-to-mcp-with-retell-ai-mcp-node)

You can connect to any HTTP-based service like Zapier, custom APIs, AWS Lambda, or cloud functions.[(2)](https://www.retellai.com/blog/connect-any-ai-voice-agent-to-mcp-with-retell-ai-mcp-node)[(3)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efmWhp8Pd5I)

This is what my provider gave me, where do I need to add this info?

{
“mcpServers”: {
“context7”: {
“url”: “[https://mcp.context7.com/mcp](https://mcp.context7.com/mcp)”,
“headers”: {
“CONTEXT7\_API\_KEY”: “YOUR\_API\_KEY”
}
}
}
}

Based on the configuration your provider gave you, here’s where to add each piece of information in Retell AI:[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

**1. MCP Server URL:** [(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

- Enter `https://mcp.context7.com/mcp` in the **MCP Server Endpoint** field when adding your MCP server[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

**2. API Key Header:** [(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

- In the **Request Headers** section (optional), add:[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
  - Header Name: `CONTEXT7_API_KEY`[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
  - Header Value: `YOUR_API_KEY` (replace with your actual API key)[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

**Step-by-step in Retell AI:** [(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

1. Click **+ Add MCP** in your agent configuration[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
2. In the **MCP Server Endpoint** field, paste: `https://mcp.context7.com/mcp`[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
3. Under **Set request headers (optional)**, add a new header:[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
  - Name: `CONTEXT7_API_KEY`[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
  - Value: Your actual Context7 API key[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

4. Click **Add MCP Tool** and select the tool you want to use[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)
5. Save your configuration[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

The configuration format your provider gave you is a standard MCP server configuration, but Retell AI uses a UI-based approach where you enter the URL and headers separately in their respective fields.[(1)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/conversation-flow/mcp-node)[(2)](https://docs.retellai.com/build/single-multi-prompt/mcp)

1. I created an agent

2. connected my MCP and defined the variables needed for the query (no header)

3. MCP function is also set. Screenshot: [https://photos.app.goo.gl/37JwSmf2mLpRDYBF9](https://photos.app.goo.gl/37JwSmf2mLpRDYBF9) (I’m not allowed to upload more than one picture in this forum)

4. In the instructions I define those variables: [https://photos.app.goo.gl/g5wDCUJddziiBvq68](https://photos.app.goo.gl/g5wDCUJddziiBvq68)

5. But it doesn’t work. Looks like retell is sending an empty request: Failed to get LLM response
Error: Error encountered in LLM call: Failed to get response from any LLM provider. errorMsgs: [400 Invalid schema for function ‘bilabot\_k\_nodes’: [None, ‘null’] is not valid under any of the given schemas., 400 Invalid schema for function ‘bilabot\_k\_nodes’: [None, ‘null’] is not valid under any of the given schemas., 400 Invalid schema for function ‘bilabot\_k\_nodes’: [None, ‘null’] is not valid under any of the given schemas.]
